SNOW
KITING /
KITEBOARDING Snow kiting is the latest
winter sport. Large highly controllable kites are
used to blast snow kite pilots along with just the
power of the wind! The BIG AIR jumps that snow
boarders and skiers are pulling under the power
and security of power kites are simply breath
taking. "Flatlanders will love it" An offshoot of
its water bound cousin kiteboarding. Snow kiting
allows a skier or snowboarder, kiteboarder
harnessed to the 100-foot-long reins of
a power kite to launch upwards of 40 feet off
horizontal terrain. The arrival of a
water-relaunchable kite in 1998 attracted nearly a
dozen new kiteboarding manufactures, inspired
three magazine startups, kite shops, and is
winning over many American's estimated 1.5 million
wakeboarders. In Europe, where the shift from
water to snow originated, there's already a snow
kiting competition circuit. And if the sport of
snow kiting can take off on such a cramped
continent, imagine the possibilities for places
like North Dakota and Minnesota. "The best place
for this isn't really a ski resort, but an open
field where you could snow kite for miles and days
at a time," Snow Kiting is a lot easier to learn
than kiteboarding on the
water! It is easy to stand on snow, which makes
the whole process easier! It also takes a lot less
wind to drive a kite board across snow than it
does across water. The whole learning experience
is lot less daunting as you need much less power
and wind to get your kite moving. Finally, holding
an edge in snow is much easier than kiteboarding
on the water. Making the up wind
progress much easier to master. All you need is
snow, a pasa instructor (for beginners) and a
power kite You can turn a cold winter's day into a
blistering, adrenaline soaked experience!

SNOW
KITING / KITEBOARDING
GEAR
The
key to snow kiting
is dressing properly. Be sure to dress plenty warm
for those cold winter conditions. The proper kite
clothing to wear would be things like a good pair
of snowpants or some kind of bibs. Warm
gloves and a helmet with maybe some elbow and knee
pads. A nice set of sunglasses or goggles to help
keep the glare and snow out of your eyes. Also do
not forget your snowkiting ice screw. Gear for
kiteboarding would be something like a wet suit
and some kind of foot protection if needed. A
helmet and sunglasses are great pieces of
equipment to use while kiteboarding also. Don't
forget that main flotation device called a life
vest. Choose a kite. Both a foil or inflatable
kite will work fine for snow kiting
but lean more towards the inflatable to use for
kiteboarding. Do your powerstroke to get you
moving, edge against to kite and let her rip.
Always try and use the proper snow
kiting / kiteboarding gear. Find out more about
what gear is available through our kite
shop. |

HOW HARD
IS SNOW KITING AND KITEBOARDING TO
LEARN?
Yes
snow kiting can be hard, but it doesn't have to
be. With the proper instruction, you could be
riding the very first day or maybe two.
You may experience frustration in areas where
learning might take a little longer. Remember,
even masters of these sports are constantly
learning. The best way
to learn snow kiting and kiteboarding is with a
pasa certified instructor. Do not
see Joe Blow down the street that has one
kite and is still trying to figure out how to use
the wind window. An
experienced kite instructor will have
the latest gear and the ability to show
you how to use it. This will make your learning
curve ten times
quicker. |
